Deep magenta. Expressive, spice-tinged aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, potpourri and olive, along with a smoky overtone. Nicely concentrated and supple on the palate, showing very good focus and thrust to its juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. Finishes with repeating spiciness, good clarity, well-judged tannins and a hint of florality.

The 2019 Saint Joseph Silice would be a great introduction for readers looking to understand the style and quality of this estate. Coming from a handful of hillside parcels of vines averaging 30 years old, it reveals a deep ruby/plum color as well as ripe, savory notes of dried herbs, peppered game, new leather, and assorted red and black fruits. Rich, mouth-filling, and nicely structured, it’s another wine from this estate that has wonderful purity of fruit as well as balance. It can be drunk any time over the coming 10-12 years.

Even the entry-level cuvée, the 2019 Saint Joseph Silice, is superbly concentrated and rich this year. Black cherries and purple raspberries lead the way, while the palate is full-bodied, creamy and just downright delicious, lifted by hints of mint and grounded by notes of black olive. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

100% Marsanne. Aged in stainless steel, undergoes malolactic fermentation. Tank sample. Tasted blind. A fresh and inviting nose with a tinge of flinty smoke. Lovely freshness on the palate with creamy-textured honeycomb. Saline and ripe and finishes rounded and gentle. (AC)
