Sourced from old, partly ungrafted Riesling vines in the Saar and the Mosel, the intensely colored 2023 Alte Reben opens with a clear, fresh and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe and juicy fruits intermingled with crunchy slate notes. On the palate, this is a rich, elegant and intense yet vital and savory Riesling with a dense texture and fine, crystalline acidity that carries the wine to a long, intense and saline finish. Tasted as an unfiltered sample in August 2024 and from bottle in early September from AP 39 24, this wine is gorgeous yet a bit muted at this early stage after the bottling. 50,000 bottles filled in September 2024. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

The 2023 Riesling Alte Reben comes from vines at least 50 years old in Saar and Mosel, particularly those not included in the GGs and other Grosse Lagen . The nose offers freshness and savor reminiscent of chamomile and yarrow crushed with lemon peel. The palate is serene and soaringly bright with lovely citrus and herb savor, yet it maintains a beautifully rich texture of juiciness despite its sleekness. In a way, it perfectly expresses its identity as a delicious Mosel-Saar combo.

Own-rooted close-planted vines 65–100 years old. To be released September 2024, a little later than usual, and still on lees. Cask sample. Deep straw colour. Intense nose and much more broachable than the regular bottling with strong fruit underneath – but still that metallic impression on the end. (JR)
