La Poderina's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty, juicy wine with good near-term appeal. Sweet red cherries, plums, spices and menthol flesh out on the juicy, fruit-driven finish. This is a solid effort, but the usual level of excitement is missing.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a very beautiful wine with lots of little loose ends to keep your attention. Overall, the bouquet is extremely clean and polished, but you’ll also notice playful outreaches of berry fruit, cola, pressed violets, crushed mineral and cool menthol. This is one of the most expressive wines of the vintage especially thanks to the finesse and delicate layering it offers. Drink: 2016-2027. Deep crimson. Opulent and ripe and on the verge of being sweet and jammy. Hints of vanilla. Quite substantial fruit on the palate with matching big tannins. Creamy vanilla finish compromising originality. (WS)
