Becker's 2016 Sankt Paul Spätburgunder GG is deep, pure and fresh on the nose, which is driven by the pure limestone terroir and genetics from Burgundy. On the palate, this is a tight, fresh and pure, silky-textured and gripping Pinot with wonderfully tight structure, stimulating bitters and refreshing limestone and grape tannins. This is a highly attractive Pinot, and you can serve it to me by day and by night; I'd never reject it. Tasted in Wiesbaden, August 2019.

Compared with its stablemates from the Becker estate the Sankt Paul is still a little reticent. In addition to the obligatory cherries the nose also exhibits restrained notes of raspberry and toast, just leaving enough room for a hint of herbs to add complexity. On the palate the wine is very compact and still quite closed, but healthy acidity and solid tannins provide a firm structure, which will give the wine plenty of time to evolve. (MS)
