The Belliviere 2004 Jasnieres Calligramme smells sweetly of gardenia and apple jelly, and pungently of lemon zest, mint and chalk dust. Amazingly dense and lush in the mouth, it envelops the palate in richness and leaves strikingly long floral, apple and quince traces with hits of citrus zest and chalky minerality. Richer though less dynamic or strikingly buoyant today than its younger-vines counterpart (belying the fact that – unlike them – it failed to undergo malolactic fermentation), this will I am confident – given time – become a truly profound wine and a monument to the reclamation of a great terroir.
