Flamboyant and lively, Chidaine's 2016 Vin de France Moelleux is showing superbly today, evoking aromas of almonds, saffron, baked pear and ripe orchard fruits. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it's structured and perfectly balanced, with bright acids and a lively mid-palate that culminates in an endless, mineral and subtle finish. Kudos!

Parcel with clay-limestone soils in Vouvray. 4 hl/ha. RS 22 g/l. Certified organic and biodynamic (Biodyvin). Golden hue. Complex nose and palate with developed notes of dried fruits, nuts and cooked apple. Sweet but not overbearingly so. Lively acidity. Harmonious, with a certain elegance. A wine to match with food. Hailing from a very frosted year (90% of the fruit was lost), the 2016 Moelleux has 25g/L of residual sugar, giving a sweet embrace and adding a little padding to what would otherwise be a light bodied wine. Its edges are rounded, and it is starting to develop a savory, toasty note in addition to the ripe apple fruit and festive spices.
The 2016 Vin de France Mœlleux from Vouvray (but bottled in Montlouis, so the wine has to be indicated as Vin de France) is irritatingly mature (after less than five years from the harvest) and rather oxidative on the nose (which I like). Round, pretty sweet and lush on the palate, this is an intense, tightly structured and sustainable Chenin. I wouldn't store it for too long, though. Tasted in March 2021.
