A spicy blend of cedar and pine, laced with dill and clove, wafts up from the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Sella del Leccio. This is elegant and silky, with polished red fruits and sweet spices cascading throughout. It leaves grippy tannins to resonate and a bump of residual acidity to balance, finishing structured and a bit drying. Unfortunately, I'm tasting more wood than fruit and wonder how it will integrate over time. I remain skeptical.

Here's a new wine from Argiano that addresses the growing demand for this entry-level category of red from Tuscany. With its own vineyard designate with young vines, the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Sella del Leccio shows a medium dark color and lots of dark berry fruit and black cherry. This Rosso is equally shaped by lightly toasted notes of sweet oak and spice. The oak is still a bit too strong but should integrate with a few more months. Only 2,700 bottles were made, and this wine is not exported to the United States.
Aged for six months in large Slavonian oak. Mid ruby. Dusty finish after some very ripe fruit. Not quite enough fruit in the middle. (JR)
The Argiano 2019 Rosso di Montalcino shows the slightly darker color and richer concentration that is characteristic of wines from this vintage. The pretty Rosso offers good depth and width, qualities obviously rendered to the palate, with rich blackberry and dark cherry flavors. On the intensity continuum that sees Rosso on one side and Brunello on the other, this wine actually clocks in closer to the Brunello side of the spectrum. That makes this an especially interesting wine for those looking for Sangiovese power at an attractive value price tag. The wine ages in French oak casks for a few quick months. Production is 51,000 bottles.
