Only 3,600 bottles of the 2012 Valdarno di Sopra Vigna dell'Impero were made. This pure expression of Sangiovese represents a tremendous effort by Tenuta Sette Ponti and its winemaking team. The wine is utterly delicious with bright berry definition and just the right level of spice and tobacco at the back. The results are streamlined and elegant. Although 2012 was a hot and dry vintage in many parts of Tuscany, this wine shows no sign of that difficulty. I was absolutely smitten by the whole package. Congratulations to Tenuta Sette Ponti on this new wine of theirs.

A new wine for Sette Ponti, the 2012 Vigna dell'Impero is 100% Sangiovese from Valdarno di Sopra. Crushed red berries, flowers and gently knit spices are all lifted throughout. Ideally, the 2012 could use a little more pliancy through the mid-palate, but it is attractive just the same. Drink this delicate, gracious Sangiovese over the next handful of years.
