Score 17/20 · Drink 2025-2032, Jancis Robinson MW, Oct 2024

Old vines, low-yielding plots south of the Vienne, on sandy soils interspersed with clay-limestone marl. Refined and elegant – a big step up compared with Les Charmes. Light on its feet – a ballet dancer. Beautifully restrained oak – this is a wine showing off its terroir. (AWH)

At this stage, the 2022 Les Varennes du Grand Clos is currently uptight. Despite having spent 14-16 months in oak (10-15% new) and then resting in tank before bottling, it needs at least another year before it can be better assessed. It’s richly fruited with ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit flavours, but the 2022 is a wine that’s currently holding its breath. Once it exhales, this site will sing.
