Tasting notes
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets has two-thirds whole-bunch fruit (it was two-thirds the previous vintage). The stem addition enhanced the complexity of the aromatics with upfront blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with sous bois, tobacco and slate-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of energy and tension. I love the balance here, the spiciness that begins on the back palate and ends up at the front, chaperoned by a lovely saltiness that leaves you wanting more. What a superb Volnay this is. It comes highly recommended.

Planted in early 1960s (better than the vines on SO4 rootstocks of the 1980s). 50% whole bunch because he thinks it goes especially well with this vineyard. Barrel sample. Paler then some of his other cuvées. Very fresh, intense nose not dominated by whole bunch, with lots of freshness and depth of fruit. Perhaps not that long at the moment but fine and expressive of the vineyard. (JR)
