Tasting notes
In issue #98 I reported on the release (after 25 years) of the 1970 Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva, which is another classic from this extraordinary winery. That wine will set readers back at least $150, provided you can find it! For less than half that price, consumers can purchase the 1990 Valbuena, a gloriously rich, opulently textured, super-concentrated wine that is loaded with jammy black-cherry and curranty fruit. The nose soars from the glass, offering up tell-tale aromas of toasty new oak and intense, concentrated fruit. Velvety-textured, full-bodied, and concentrated, with gobs of glycerin, and a long, heady, layered finish, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years.
