The 2017 Esprit de Pavie has a fragrant bouquet that feels more defined than when tasted out of barrel, adorned with attractive raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a bit hard at the moment with a pinched, rather blunt finish. I would just like more flesh here.

The 2017 Esprit de Pavie, which comes under Bordeaux AC, was affected by the frost, more than 50% of the vines in fact. It has a high-toned, pastille-like bouquet with blueberry and raspberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with rustic tannin, simple and quite firm in the mouth with a light peppery finish.

The 2017 Esprit de Pavie is a terrific entry-level wine from the Perse family. Succulent cherry and plum fruit is pushed forward in a juicy, plump red that incorporates fruit from various Perse properties.

65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc. 15 months in second-fill oak. Vines in Castillon and St-Émilion. 180,000 bottles. Not a third wine. Deep greyish crimson. Tangy and spicy. High acidity, lots of spice, a little bit hard on the palate, especially on the finish. (JH)
