The 2023 Condrieu les Chaillees de l'Enfer, sourced from mid-slope old vines and bottled as a parcel selection rather than a lieu-dit, was vinified in foudres and barrels (without truncated vats). It reveals a solar yet elegant aromatic profile, offering aromas of almond, apricot, white flowers and white peach. Medium- to full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, it combines ripeness with freshness, supported by a fine spine of acidity. Both dense and elegant, it’s framed by a subtle, gastronomic bitterness that lends definition, concluding with a perfumed, endless finish. This is a compelling Condrieu that marries power with finesse.

A much bigger, richer wine, the 2023 Condrieu Les Chaillées De L'Enfer shows ripe orange, honeyed flowers, spice, crushed stone, and even some exotic, orchard fruit notes. It's full-bodied and offers a big, rich, layered profile that has remarkable balance, a dense, layered mid-palate, incredible concentration, and a great finish. This is an insanely good Condrieu to drink over the coming decade. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Condrieu Les Chaillées de L'Enfer unfolds first into pronounced honeysuckle, chamomile, right-ripe apricot and peachy tones. Subtle pastry adds more aromatic complexity. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused, the outstanding 2023 walks off the stage with a long and fragrant finale.

The only one of Vernay's wines in the (Yapp Brothers) line-up bottled in an Alsatian-style bottle, making me wonder if that's meant to suggest something about the style of the wine? And perhaps it's autosuggestion from the bottle shape, but there does seem to be a bit of a petrol note alongside more characteristic aromas of juicy apricot and gardenia. This is very intense and concentrated but is also fresher than many Condrieus. (JRL)
