Moving to the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva, it pours a youthful medium red color and opens to aromas of toasted cedar, dried cherries, menthol, and dried thyme. Medium-bodied, it retains good freshness through the palate, with balanced concentration and notes of orange citrus through the finish, with angular tannins that do hold on a bit. It is a very enjoyable Riserva, though. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

I'm on the fence regarding the Capanna 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from a vintage that struggles to show balance, especially in terms of its phenolic ripeness and tannins. This is a comment I make for 2018 across the appellation. In terms of Capanna's Riserva, you get sophisticated results with a nice combination of dark fruit, grilled herb, tarragon and spice. However, the tannins are quite grippy and strong nonetheless. There is a note of baked cherry sweetness on the finish. This is a limited 3,500-bottle release.

Darkly alluring yet moody in the glass, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva slowly evolves with suggestions of dusty rose and old cedar spice box, giving way to crushed plums and lavender. This is impossibly fresh, nearly juicy in feel, with crisp wild berry fruits and cooling acidity. Sneaky tannins settle in, adding an angular feel through the finish, as the 2018 tapers off with a bitter tinge and a bit dry. The extended barrel aging may have been a poor mix with the finessed fruit of the vintage.

Deep lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Layered, savoury, minerally nose that still has to open up fully to the fruit. Gorgeous lush, tangy fruit with fantastic tactile tannins. Very long and focused and can already be approached. (WS)
