The 2015 Campo di Tenaglia is dark, suave and enveloping, with soft contours and plenty of up-front appeal. Ripe dark cherry, plum, licorice, tobacco, grilled herbs, lavender and new leather all flesh out in the glass. This is another soft, approachable 2015 from Andrea Franchetti. Here, too, the heat of the growing season has blurred a measure of site expression.

Here is a dark, moody and penetrating wine. The 2015 Campo di Tenaglia is one of three wines in Andrea Franchetti's new line of single-vineyard Cabernet Francs. Although the texture here is enormously rich and opulent, this is perhaps the softest and most supple of the three expressions. It is also the most defined by its mineral identity. The bouquet reveals distinctive characteristics of flint, crushed mineral and dry chalk. This adds to the dryness and the overall intensity of the wine. In the mouth, however, it shows savory and rich succulence. This wine really speaks to my tastes.
Deeper, bluer colour than the Magnacosta. Meatier nose than the Magnacosta. But tighter, grainier tannins in evidence. Very much set for the long term with structure dominating fruit until the very end. A bit like a particularly fine-boned St-Émilion? Very long and rich on the finish. Pretty glorious! Certainly very ambitious. (JR)
