Tasting notes
The 2006 Colonia (Sangiovese) is a new wine made from a single parcel that was planted in 1993 and had been used for the straight Riserva (not the Rancia) prior to 2006. It is made in a different style from the rest of the Rancia Sangioveses, with more extraction and greater reliance on French oak. The Colonia shows remarkable elegance and polish, something that isn't within the grasp of all of the estate's reds in this vintage. Sweet, silky tannins provide the canvas for strikingly perfumed red fruits, flowers, spices, tobacco and herbs. The Colonia possesses dazzling inner perfume to match its racy, sensual personality. This is another terrific showing from Felsina. As outstanding as this is, the price is a bit of a shocker for an estate with such a distinguished track record of delivering great quality and value. It's one thing if a wine achieves a certain price level after building a substantial track record, but launching a new wine at this price in this economic environment is a very dangerous proposition.

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. Felsina is the house Giuseppe Mazzocolin built, to borrow a phrase from Babe Ruth and the original Yankee Stadium. Last year Mazzocolin decided to step back from his insane day to day schedule running the winery. While Mazzocolin remains intimately involved in the winery, the future leadership of Felsina is in the hands of Giovanni Poggiali, the oldest son of proprietor Giuseppe Poggiali.
