The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Gain is deeper, more concentrated and more introverted than the Referts, revealing scents of citrus oil, fresh peach, honeycomb and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with chalky dry extract and lively acids. This has turned out very well in bottle.

In tank since just before the 2018 harvest and will be bottled in March or April. 2014 was the first vintage. Vines were worked by his younger brother Benoît Ente. 75% barrel and 25% glass demijohns. Gorgeously, seductively creamy aroma complemented by tangy green fruits and a light spice. Gorgeous depth of fruit and spice and more savoury on the palate. Terrific finesse with power underneath. Just a touch of sweet spice that balances the sharp intensity of citrus fruit. Drawn out to great length. Already a perfect whole but needs time. Tension on the finish. (JH)
