Tasting notes
The Cusumano 2020 Sicilia Sàgana (with fruit from the Vigneto del Torrone Bianco Tenuta San Giacomo) is 100% Nero d'Avola, fermented and aged in oak for 18 months. The specific site called "Torrone Bianco" has a high presence of white pebbles mixed into the soil. This wine offers a lot of intensity that serves to remind you of a hot vintage. The wine's 15% alcohol content is impossible to miss, and the aromas lean into baked plum and scorched earth. There is a slightly disjointed moment of bitter sweetness on the close. This is a production of 15,000 rather heavy glass bottles.

Darkly floral yet understated, the 2020 Sàgana smolders up with crushed rocks, black currants and cedar. It's round and supple with ripe wild berry fruits and mineral tones carried across a core of juicy acidity. This leaves a sour citrus twang and gently grippy tannins to linger as nuances of wild blueberry and minerals fade. This is nicely balanced, yet I crave more Nero d'Avola typicity.
