Tasting notes
The 2022 Nierstein Hipping GG displays a radiant golden-yellow color and opens with a deep, concentrated and slightly smoky/flinty bouquet but is still closed and reductive. Full-bodied and lush, with vital acidity, this is a textural yet still not that energetic Hipping that was bottled a week before I tasted it for the first time in mid-July 2023. The wine is fleshy and powerful but fine, with excellent potential and a grippy and fresh finish. It is a rather masculine Riesling with tannins and concentration. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

AP number 56 23. Intense and intriguing on the nose. A real array of rich flavours on the palate – an attention-grabber! Exciting. A tiny hint of brie here only adds to the intrigue of such intensity. Tastes as though the yields were pretty low. Tense but already approachable. (JR)
Apple and lemon mingle with aromas of flint and wet stone. Crisp acidity etches hieroglyphics on to the stony, imposing and citrus-laced walls. Less accessible than the Gunderloch from the same site. Challenging and powerful. Lingering and textured grapefruit finish. Tremendous potential. (PS)
The exotic fruit and spice aromas of this site are there, but this dry riesling masterpiece is still pretty closed. Then on the palate it takes you by surprise with a stunning interplay of concentrated stone fruit and racy brilliance, the slatey minerality totally breathtaking at the dangerously energetic finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
