From Alta Mesa Vineyard and Slide Hill, the 2022 Mourvèdre is 89% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, and the rest Viognier that saw 70% stems. It's a more savory, ripe, yet still sexy beauty with ripe red and black fruit, baking spices, leather, loamy soil, pepper, and sandalwood. Full-bodied, deep, rich, and concentrated, with ripe tannins and beautiful purity, it's a stunning Mourvèdre. Drink 2025-2037. Jim Binns continues to absolutely crush it with Andremily, and I’ve yet to see him miss a beat. The majority of the 2023s were tasted from barrel, and there are a couple of wines that could easily top out the scale, showing the combination of power and purity he’s become known for. These are always rich, concentrated, full-throttle wines, yet the cooler nature of 2023 brings extra precision and vibrancy. By contrast, the 2022s are more sun-kissed, bigger, and more opulent, delivering everything you’d expect from this incredible winemaker. Binns is also now the owner of the Slide Hill Vineyard in the Edna Valley, located just across from John Alban’s estate, and the quality coming from this site has taken off since he’s been in charge. Across the board, whether it’s the Rhône blends, the Mourvèdre, or the flagship Syrah-driven cuvées, the quality is just off the charts, and this remains one of the most exciting estates in California.

The 2022 Mourvèdre is going to be brilliant, and it's clearly in the same ballpark as the 2021, although slightly riper in style. Blackberries, black raspberries, ground pepper, sandalwood, and loamy earth all define the aromatics, and this puppy hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a broad, layered mouthfeel, velvety yet building tannins, and a blockbuster finish.
Blended with 10% Syrah and 1% Viognier and fermented with 70% whole clusters, the 2022 Mourvèdre is the most turbocharged example of the variety imaginable. Tasted as a finished barrel sample before its August bottling, the nose is a colossus of dark fruits, with faint but perceivable touches of bramble and garrigue peering through. The palate is, unsurprisingly, absolutely gigantic, truly attaining the unctuosity of syrup or motor oil. As with the other red wines in the range, but to an even greater degree, the finish is laden with oak-derived richness and cake-like lavishness. This is undoubtedly impressive due to its sheer volume and density, but it's best enjoyed on the young side to capture its exponential richness.
