2013 Gevrey Chambertin Poissenots

(Humbert describest this as his flagship wine and his "pride and joy"; the crop level here was 32 hectoliters per hectare in 2013): Bright deep red. Urgent aromas of crushed black berries and licorice pastille complicated by a saline element. Rocky and taut in the mouth, with the crushed black fruit flavors currently hardened by the wine's firm acidity and tannic spine. Best today on the vibrant, long finish, which displays lovely lift. Made from thin soil over hard, rocky calcaire with an iron content, this youthfully austere wine will require patience.

This is also exceptionally fresh and bright with a cool and airy nose of essence of both red and dark cherry fruit that is trimmed in a touch of oak. The intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess lovely vibrancy and fine delineation before culminating in a saline-inflected, delicious and ever-so-mildly austere finish where the wood expressed by the nose resurfaces. This too will require a few years of cellaring before it will be approachable. In sum, this is textbook Poissenot.<br />
