Smoky and polished. Lots of drive and focus. Well done – approachable but with a future. Lightly bitter end. (JR)

The 2015 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Macherelles has a rather austere, earthy bouquet with touches of dewy pasture and woodland scents coming through with aeration. A few swirls of the glass and there is an attractive wild mint scent that surfaces. The palate is well balanced with peach and lychee on the entry lending a more exotic personality than the Les Encégnières. It is not as complex or as tensile as its 2014 counterpart, although the finish does deliver appreciable energy and persistence. It should offer several years of pleasure.
