The 1991 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, burning embers, orange rind and thrilling carnal nuances. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, it's structured around an elegantly muscular chassis of fine, powdery tannins and racy acids, concluding with a sapid finish. This is a collected, serious Clos des Ducs that was surely comparatively austere in its youth, but today it's beginning to drink beautifully.

Dark red with a healthy rim. Aromas of black fruits, licorice and spices come across as purer than those of the 1993. Supple and fully mature but still with lovely fruity energy; not a particularly mineral style but boasts enticing restrained sweetness and pliancy and finishes with ripe, easygoing, integrated tannins. This suave, broad wine is perfect today but it has the structure and energy to go on for a number more years in a cool cellar. (14% alcohol; October 3 harvest; 28 h/h; 3.49 pH)

Harvest 3 October, yield 28 hl/ha, pH 3.49. Suffered from following the lauded 1990 vintage. Sturdy treacle toffee aromas. Firm and fresh. Lots of intensity. Really very fine if not dramatic but all in the right balance. So smooth and beautiful. Great for now. (JR)
