Inky, tarry yet sweet too. The 15% alcohol is skilfully hidden. The finish is dry. Certainly true to its origins although still youthful. (JR)

The 2005 Shiraz is purple-colored with an alluring perfume of cedar, wood smoke, pepper, and blueberry muffin. The wine has ample spicy fruit, but narrows on the mid-palate. The finish is fruit-filled but clipped. The family owned Schild Estate dates back to the early 1950s. Their vineyard holdings now encompass 380 acres. The first Schild Estate wines were produced in 1998. Importer: Deborah Gray, The Australian Wine Connection, Carlsbad, CA; www.schildestate.com.au; Also tasted: 2005 Merlot (84), 2005 Sparkling Shiraz (90)
