Ten years after the vintage, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape is in fine shape. There's a hint of bricking at the rim, but the bouquet still shows hints of pressed flowers and caramelized cherries. It's full-bodied, silky and long on the finish, possessing great elegance and at least a few more years of prime-time drinking. Fabrice Brunel recalls it was a very warm vintage, with picking in mid-September, when temperatures were still 35 degrees Celsius, reselling in difficult conditions. There was no Centenaire produced, with those grapes being included here.

Brilliant ruby-red. Spicy red berry preserve and floral aromas are complemented by white pepper and smoky minerals. Fresh raspberry, cherry and candied lavender on the palate, with tangy acidity adding lift. Elegant, precise Chateauneuf with excellent finishing clarity and intense floral persistence.

I was able to taste through 4 different samples of André’s 2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with each showing plenty of texture, depth and richness. The odds are that there will not be a Centenaire, so this cuvee should benefit from the inclusion of the old vine Grenache from the Farguerol lieu-dit, which was easily my favorite. All of the samples possessed perfumed, Provencal aromatics, medium to full-body, and the upfront suppleness of the vintage. The base cuvee will most likely be an outstanding wine that will be approachable on release, yet age surprisingly well given its overall balance and harmony.
