The 1980 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes across as rather rustic and loose-knit on the nose with decayed red fruit, lots of mulchy aromas and a dusty attic note. Dry tannins, ferrous with a bit of VA on the finish, frame the palate. I am not a huge fan of the Domaine's wines in this era, and this feels past its peak. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

The 1980 Echézeaux from Domaine Mugneret came direct from the domaine. I had high expectations since this is an excellent and under-estimated vintage. The aromatics did not disappoint with ebullient red berry fruit, wild mushroom (morels?), hints of caramel and undergrowth. The palate is very refined and well balanced, more weight than I expected and with such sucrosity on the finish I wonder whether the late doctor Mugneret chaptalized this Echézeaux more than he needed? That might explain the caramel element on the nose. Still, it has a long and tender finish, but I wager that this could have been a great wine instead of a very good one. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.
