The 2016 Scharzhofberger P Riesling opens with a deep, pure and smoky bouquet with crunchy slate notes and very fine Riesling aromas that still play the second fiddle here. This nose indicates a great terroir wine from the most famous vineyard along the Saar. Lush and elegant but aristocratic, terribly complex and long on the palate, this is a fascinating dry Scharzhofberger from the Pergentsknopp plot. The 2016 is as fine and filigreed as it is intense and complex. The finish, however, is mind blowing, Van Volxem's 2016 Pergentsknopp is the finest dry Scharzhofberger I have ever tasted and one of the finest dry German Rieslings I have tasted from this more than excellent and digestible vintage. What great tension here. This is powerhouse of a Riesling. The combination of purity, tension and complexity is fabulous here. Tasted March 2018.

White peach, almond and lime are garlanded in bittersweetly-perfumed iris, thyme and headily-fragrant lily-of-the-valley. This translates into seductive and haunting inner-mouth perfume, perfectly complementing creaminess of texture and lusciously juicy fruit. A glowing evocation of peach kernel piquancy, alkaline and stony inflections, along with a mouthwatering suffusion of maritime salinity combine for a concentrated and profoundly complex yet also delightfully refreshing finish that lasts well beyond the point where I felt compelled to take another sip – and not to spit it. I’ve never before tasted such a superb dry wine from the great Scharzhofberg. I hope that this wine’s sheer lifespan will be similarly distinguished, though I have remained restrained in my numerical prognosis. (The label here follows by now long-standing estate practice in displaying a prominent capital “P,” but small print now identifies the Pergentsknopp, now officially a VDP “Grosse Lage.”)
A bit like essence of the regular Scharzhofberg from this producer – with even more pronounced saltiness. At the moment, this wine is almost painfully concentrated; definitely not for current drinking. Like licking a stone. (JR)
