Score 86/100 · Drink 2018-2024, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2017

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay les Angles 1er Cru from Domaine Louis Boillot has quite an expressive nose of black cherries, orange zest and some volatility that becomes stronger with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy entry. This feels a little over-extracted, and it lacks a bit of complexity and grace on the bold but uncouth finish. A disappointing showing vis-à-vis its showing from barrel. Tasted September 2017.

Bright, dark red. Slightly medicinal cast to the aromas of cherry liqueur and licorice. Juicy and intense, offering attractive high-toned lift to the black cherry and spice flavors. Not a particularly fleshy style of Volnay but nicely balanced and penetrating, with fine-grained, firm tannins reaching the teeth and the sides of the mouth. In spite of its impression of high pH, this wine's acidity and tannic spine will require patience.

Bright, deep red. Very ripe, almost jammy aromas of cherry and redcurrant. A chewy, tactile wine with an impression of solidity to its red fruit and spice flavors. Finishes with big, chewy, slightly rough tannins and a lingering suggestion of dried fruits. In a distinctly powerful style. This wine was the highest in pH in the cellar in 2014, along with the Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles, but weighs in at a modest 12. 4% alcohol. Like the Grands Poisots, it will require a minimum of five or six years of cellaring.
