A sun-blessed summer ensured full ripeness of fruit, and rain just before the harvest provided Klaus Keller with the botrytis he wished for in order to produce his ideal of a Grosses Gewächs. This is also reflected in the wine’s deep golden colour with orange hue on the rim. A hint of kerosene indicates advanced maturity, while an animating fragrance of caramel reflects the heat of the summer. On the palate acidity keeps a low profile, leaving plenty of scope for rich texture and full flavour enhanced by a sweet nuance of caramel. A gentle bitterness of apple peel adds complexity but also indicates the onset of oxidation. Still enjoyable but should be drunk soon. (MS)
