The 2018 La Garricq, which is owned by Château Paloumey, has an attractive, quite floral bouquet of well-defined black fruit infused with crushed violet, driven by the 15% Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied, plush and luxurious, with a silky-smooth texture and fine acidity. The ripe, almost opulent cassis and blueberry finish is unapologetically modern, but quite classy and persistent. This is an excellent Moulis that should age with style.

Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château La Garricq offers lots of Bing cherry, plum, cedary oak, and violet notes in a lifted, juicy, straightforward, almost volatile style. Drink up.

Full bottle 1,291 g. A 3-ha estate owned by Ch Paloumey. In 2018: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot. Average age 27 years. Yield 29 hl/ha. Gravel and marly clay. Harvest is by hand and machine. Fermented in tank, 20–26 days’ post-fermentation maceration. Malo and 12 months’ élevage in oak (30% new). Fined with egg whites. In conversion to organic. Consultant Axel Marchal. Deep crimson. Rather subtle first impression, hinting at dark-fruit and not obviously oaky at all. Then nicely chewy on the palate, the alcohol is – unexpectedly – not intrusive. Savoury dark fruit on the palate, firm, grainy tannins. Very Moulis, in a good way. Needs a good bit of time in bottle. Interesting blackberry and tar aromas and flavors. Medium body, good center palate of fruit and a medium finish.
