The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru feels rather pinched on the nose although it opens up with aeration to reveal quite dark broody black fruit laced with tobacco and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, dense and quite extracted black fruit laced with cassis and spices, although the finish is just missing some finesse. I would cellar this for three or four years as it has more to give. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots includes around 20% whole bunch fruit. It has a perfumed bouquet, well defined even if, like Etienne Grivot’s Suchots that I tasted earlier the same morning, it lacks the opulence synonymous with the vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little firmer in the mouth like a Malconsorts with a long, sustained, quite saline finish. Excellent.
