From the Pergentsknopp, the 2019 Scharzhofberger P Riesling GG opens very intense and flinty on the lemon-scented nose, and it is even more straight and challenging than the generic Scharzhofberger, with lemon leaf aromas and vulnerable stony aromas of wet crushed slate and quartzite. Piquant and fresh on the palate, this is a lean, tight, dry, grippy and persistently salty but also dense and juicy Pergentsknopp that lacks a couple of years of bottle age to shine fully bright, but this is melting pot with loads of perfectly ripe Riesling grapes. The acidity is fresh and piquant yet ripe, and the textural composition is still more edgy and rough compared to the generic Scharzhofberger. However, this makes the 2019 a tight and tensioned, very fresh and even juicy "P" whose true potential will be revealed only in 5-10 years from now. The finish, however, is spectacularly long, refined, juicy and very intense. To buy or not to buy? Certainly yes, if you have the right storage capacity. However, I'd buy the generic "Scharz" as well, and drink it first. Tasted from AP 21 20 in March 2021.

Over the years the Pergentsknopp has become something like the flagship Grosses Gewächs of van Volxem, and 2019 is no exception. On the nose, gentle sprinklings of cumin and aniseed embellish an already impressive composition of herbal and mineral aromas. The palate is oozing juice without sacrificing structure. Sappy green-herbal flavours work in unison with dusty and saline mineral nuances, embedded in a rich texture. Very generous, burgundian style, but unmistakably Riesling. (MS)
