The fruit comes from two vineyards, one in Firgrove and one in the Polkadraai hills. Some Loire clones. He tells me this is his 'Steven Spurrier wine', because when Spurrier tasted it, he told van Loggerenberg that it reminded him of Loire wines. Spontaneous fermentation. 45% concrete (hexagonal tanks) and 55% French oak barrels. 50% whole bunch. 10 months' ageing. Loamy, mushroomy, rain-bruised petals nose, full of red-fruit fragrance and graphite. Such intensity of fresh fruit! Like cracking a pomegranate open on the rocks. Baharat spices. Wildly, gloriously complex, nuanced and beautiful. Long and reverberating. This guy knows how to make wine, and magic. I'd pay £60 for this wine. (TC)
