The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is powerful and sinewy in the glass. It will need a few years in bottle to soften. Iron, dried herbs, chalk, mint and white pepper add a brilliant aromatic top register. Give it a few years to soften.

Bricky ruby. Very different aroma from that of the straight Barbaresco 2018. Spicy, perfumed, really complex and just very slightly stemmy. Mineral/stony layer too. Chalky tannins, all in harmony with a long, mouth-watering finish. (JH)

The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is sure to put a smile on readers’ faces. Ample and generous, the 2017 captures the radiant side of the year, which gives the wine so much appeal and also softens some of the firmness that can make Rabajà Barbarescos hard to taste in their youth, although there is plenty of underlying structure. What I love most about the 2017 is the way it envelops all of the senses. It is, quite frankly, utterly irresistible.

Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Deep, brooding nose of ripe, sweet fruit and a little dramatic. Hints of iron, too. Gorgeous, lively acidity cuts through ripe fruit that is still a little backward. Fine sandy tannins complement the whole. Really youthful and not ready yet, but with lots of promise. Very elegant palate weight. (WS)
