Score 92/100 · Drink 2017-2030, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2016

The 2012 Barolo Monvigliero is one of the most distinctive of Paolo Scavino's excellent wines. Fruit is from the Verduno township that is showing some of the most exciting results in the appellation today. This is an elegant and tightly knitted wine with firm texture, dark concentration and a voluptuous personality. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, plum, blackberry and delicate spice. It should stand up well to the aging process.

Verduno. Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Concentrated cherry on the nose with a tiny bit of what could be spice from oak. Bright cherry fruit tightly packed with tannins. Long, fragrant and tannic. Future! (WS)

Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Cool, perfumed Amarene cherry nose. Lots of depth on the nose, but much more playful and light on the palate. Lovely succulence and grainy tannic grip. Not hugely complex, but very complete and already approachable. (WS)

Scavino's 2012 Barolo Monvigliero fleshes out beautifully in the glass. Creamy, ample and layered, the Monvigliero possesses good depth for the year, not to mention solid overall balance. This is an especially forward vintage for the Monvigliero. The only thing missing at this stage is a bit more site specificity. If that develops in bottle, the 2012 will be an even better and more satisfying Barolo than this note suggests. Over the last few months the tannins have begun to soften nicely, so we will see. Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, blood orange, cranberry and spices add the final shades of nuance on the mid-weight finish.
