The 1999 Barolo Paiagallo Vigna La Villa is laced with sweet tobacco, incense, dried herbs and worn-in leather. The 1999 has aged gracefully, even if the oak is quite prominent. Fully tertiary notes are right around the corner, so I wouldn’t wait too long on the 1999. This is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so. The medium-bodied grace of La Villa comes through nicely on a finish laced with sweet tobacco and dried herbs. Overall, the 1999 has aged gracefully, although it is one of the more delicate wines in a vintage that generally produced far more structured, powerful Barolos.

The 1999 Barolo La Villa comes from the township of Barolo and could easily be called a Cannubi. Spicier than the Serralunga and with more personality in its wild cherry, anise, and cedar aromatics, it is supple, round, and deceptively tasty, yet there is plenty of substance and weight in its flavors and fine complexity in the chocolate, tar, and licorice finish and aftertaste.
