(13% alcohol; one-third of these vines were replanted in 1987 while the rest date back to the 1960s; 30% vendange entier ): Bright, full red. Aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, red plum, earth and crushed stone convey a subtle coolness. Then supple, suave and dry, showing modest penetration but attractive inner-mouth floral lift. This wine was tasting well months before it was bottled in December, noted Mugneret. Eighty percent of the fruit from the first buds was destroyed by the frost, but production was ultimately down by only 20% as Mugneret was able to use the second-generation grapes.

Bottled two week prior to my visit, the 2016 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Charmes had been hit by the frost. The nose felt rather withdrawn despite vigorous coaxing, earthy and sultry with light mushroom scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain, quite supple tannin, rather foursquare for a Chambolle-Musigny but with adequate freshness on the finish. Not bad, but the 2015 was far superior.

80% frozen but 30 hl/ha. 30% whole bunch. Second- and third-generation buds very ripe in fact – thanks to low yields. Bright crimson. Very seductive nose. Lots of density and a certain freshness but certainly no sensation of underripeness. Massive charm. Still quite youthful; one of his more tannic wines but not aggressively so. (JR)
