The 2005 Cote Rotie les Grandes Places is a savory, mature Cote Rotie that offers the classic graphite, smoked earth and minerality of the site, as well as notes of plum sauce, hoisin and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, fully mature and with a firm edge to its tannin, I don’t see it getting any better, but it should hold for upwards of a decade.

Inky ruby. Vibrant, spicy bouquet of dark berries, cherry liqueur, minerals and cracked pepper. Surprisingly lively and fresh, offering sweet raspberry and candied cherry flavors, bracing minerality and a long, sappy finish. The tannins here are extremely sweet and fine. This will be bottled near the harvest of 2008. (Incidentally, my barrel tastings of the main components of Montez's 2006 reds suggest that the new vintage will be at least as successful as his '05s.)

Saturated ruby. Strong graphite and Asian spice notes perk up the ripe blackcurrant and blueberry aromas. Sappy, deeply concentrated kirsch and cassis flavors show strong oak spices today and are framed by solid tannins. The exotic spice quality carries through the finish, leaving impressions of cinnamon and clove.
