The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is laden with more new oak on the nose compared to its peers, and, as such, it doesn't possess the same delineation and terroir expression. There is some reduction and Brettanomyces at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, but is a little chewy and rustic. There is a very slight but nagging vegetal edge on the finish that just detracts from the overall harmony, though that may resolve with time. It looks as if it has been overtaken by their Latricières-Chambertin. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Less than 50% new oak. Barrel sample. Mid smudgy crimson. Smells ripe and sweet and sweetly oaky. Rounded, mildly chewy tannins. Great fruit and well structured by both the tannins and the acidity but I am not sure it is at the level of grand cru. (JH)

The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru offers much more complexity and terroir expression on the nose compared to the Latricières-Chambertin, delivering ebullient red berry fruit, crushed rock and light chestnut aromas. The palate is elegant and refined, the oak beautifully integrated, and the appealing, refined red cherry and wild strawberry finish fans out wonderfully. This is a sophisticated Chapelle-Chambertin that will endear itself to many wine lovers.
