Score 95/100 · Drink 2010-2031, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Jun 2010

The 2006 Malleolus de Valderramiro is a less dense color than the 2007. It exhibits a fragrant nose of Asian spices, incense, lavender, balsamic, and black fruits. On the palate it is less rich than the 2007 but, make no mistake; this is a very serious offering. It will evolve for another 5-7 years and drink well through 2031. Emilio Moro’s Malleolus de Valderramiro is sourced from an 85-year-old Tempranillo vineyard of the same name. Alcoholic fermentation is done with native yeasts after which the wine goes through malolactic in American oak. It is then aged for 18 months in new French oak. (from 85-year-old vines) Glass-staining ruby. Explosive aromas of boysenberry, cherry-vanilla, star anise and mocha, with a strong floral undertone. Dense in dark berry flavors but energetic, with strong spice and floral notes building with air and carrying through the broad, sweet, nearly endless finish. I'm sure that this will age well but it is drop-dead gorgeous right now. This went through malo in new American oak and then aged in new French oak but the effect of the wood is purely salutary.
