A quite different colour from the Maison Leroy 1949s. Much, much paler and more orange. Does this mean it was a genuine burgundy? Smells of haunting mushroom consommé. Fresh and refined. Lithe and long. Great tension and finesse. Really follows through even though it is in the twilight of its days. Throbbing, persistent finish. (JR)

Tawny in hue, the 1947 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru expresses the sunshine of the vintage with its sweet and autumnal bouquet of orange rind, dried Griotte cherry and warm spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and open-knit, with a sweet core of fruit, melting tannins and a supple, soft finish. It's an attractive mature wine that is beginning a gentle ride into the sunset but that's still some way from precipitous decline.

For many, Domaine Leroy represents the pinnacle of fine Burgundy. Owned and run by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy, the domaine in Vosne-Romanée is one strand of the Leroy empire, along with Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay.
