100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Andrew Hardy. 35-year-old vines planted  on terra rossa over limestone soils. ‘ Today the vineyard is run using organic practices.’ Excellent vintage – good winter rains, warm and dry days with cool nights throughout the growing season. Picked 11 April. Fruit was fermented in a 9-tonne closed static fermenter for 38 days  (fermentation lasting 11 days before the parcels were topped and sealed). After time on skins  the wine was pressed to French oak barriques (80% new; Saury Bordeaux, Seguin Moreau and D’Aquitaine) for 18 months’ maturation. Lively shaded dark crimson. Soft and round already. Really sweet and not overdone. Though there's quite a sucky-stony element on the end. (JR)

The 2019 First Growth Cabernet Sauvignon is leafy and minty and earthy; it speaks of gravel and iodine, black pudding and dried herbs, layers of dark chocolate, raw cocoa and cassis. It is rustic and quite light in the mouth but also intense. The pleasing claret-like aesthetic indicates a future of length and grace. It feels as if it could only come from Coonawarra. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Deeply colored, the bold and dense 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon First Growth opens with punchy redcurrant, blackcurrant, baked earth and dried herb aromas with excellent fruit volume. A tight and compact palate follows. The fruit is expressive and generous. The tannins are firm and well-formed in support, both coming together to deliver a long, composed and drying finish. It’s a classic Cabernet Sauvignon built for the long haul.
