1996 Regaleali Chardonnay

Only 300 cases were produced of this massive Chardonnay, which is somewhat reminiscent of the old style Chalone Chardonnays of the late seventies and early eighties. Light golden-colored, the wine offers up an intense, smoky, honey, buttery nose with hints of pineapples and peaches. Thick, with a viscous texture, super concentration, high alcohol, massive layers of glycerin, and a full-bodied, powerful finish, this is about as big and rich as Chardonnay can be. Aged completely in French oak, it boasts an alcohol level well in excess of 14%. It is impossible to speculate how long white wines such as this will age, but if it behaves as did the old Chalones, it will keep for at least a decade.
