Opening in the glass with scents of cherries, cassis and blackberries complemented by hints of forest floor and raw cocoa, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned, underpinned by lively acids and displaying a delicate, elegant profile. This is shaping up very nicely.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an arresting and very vanilla-y bouquet that is showing too much new oak at the moment. This is very high-toned, with orange blossom and bunches of violets rendering it Vosne-like in style. The palate is by far the sweetest and feels ostentatious in style, at the expense of terroir expression when juxtaposed against the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Long and candied on the finish. I hope this will become more toned down with bottle age.
Cask sample. Deep garnet. Intense ferny undergrowth on the nose and pretty exciting vivacity on the palate. More concentrated than most. Closer perhaps to the traditional view of red burgundy. There is so much fruit that you could, with murder in mind, drink this even sooner. GV (relatively). (JR)

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
