The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc (Domaine Gagey) is performing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnuts, clear honey, buttered toast and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's gourmand but precise, with bright acids and a long, saline finish.

The enveloping nose of melted butter, caramelized pear and hazelnut pulls you into this rich white Burgundy. Serious concentration and quite some creaminess. But, beneath this extravagance there’s a firm base of acidity, tannins and minerality that carry the long finish. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Beaune Grèves Le Clos Blanc 1er Cru clearly has more energy and terroir expression compared to the Bressandes, featuring grapefruit, citrus peel and hints of white chocolate developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a subtle touch of sour lemon on the entry and an attractive, spicy finish. It might miss a bit of tension but it should age nicely in bottle.

Cask sample. This really does smell like a red wine! Nervy nose but on the palate it’s quite rich, without a savoury sheen. Just a bit too alcoholic for perfect refreshment value. A bit stodgy. (JR)
