Dark red. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, dark plum, licorice and smoky minerals; a whiff of reduction quickly dissipated. Densely packed but also sharply delineated and taut, with its black fruit flavors lifted by licorice and rocky mineral notes. This wine showcases the breadth of the vintage while retaining superb finesse and energy. An outstanding showing, but this firmly structured wine will need at least several years of cellaring.

Cask sample. Mid greyish crimson. Dark-red fruit, almost a touch medicinal. Zesty and scented on the palate, much more refined than the Petite-Chapelle and better balance between fruit and structure. Zesty, fresh, and paper-fine texture. (JH)
(from 70-year-old vines; 50% vendange entier ): Medium ruby-red. Very pure but reticent aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, violet and licorice. Strong on the attack, boasting superb density of texture and a restrained sweetness. Pungent blackberry and violet flavors are complicated by a hint of tropical dark chocolate and convey a strong impression of salty dry extract. But brisk acidity gives this wine an almost painful tautness in the early going. (Humbert says it will be great in 20 years). A premier cru with outstanding potential.
