Tasting notes
The 2019 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has a delightful bouquet with lifted blackberry, raspberry and wild strawberry scents, light floral tones coming through with aeration. The palate is fleshy on the entry, so much so that it disguises the structure underneath. Not much in the way of grip, so this will be an approachable Les Rugiens, though there is sufficient structure to suggest it should age well over the next 15 years.

The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens is another fine success, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, raw cocoa, citrus peel, plums and rich soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with fine tannins, lively acids and excellent mid-palate amplitude. Refined and elegant, Pillot notes that part of the domaine's holding in Rugiens Bas have been replanted, meaning that more than half of this cuvée will be derived from Rugiens Hauts for the next few years.
Cask sample. Translucent crimson with a purple hint. Restrained nose. Extremely juicy with a savoury dry finish. Lots going on here. Really serious wine. Already a pleasure to drink but obviously still with a lot to give. Sinewy with much more than sweet fruit. (JR)
