Tasting notes
The 2020 Block 3 Pinot Noir shows a succulent mid-palate of fruit: raspberry seed and cranberry, cherry and brine. This is a seductive wine of floral perfume and woodsy spice, one that is still so primary it is difficult to see where it will go in the future. As it is evolving so slowly, one imagines that its future is very bright—and very long. This is totally lovely. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

As tightly and intricately woven as a basket, the 2020 Pinot Noir Block 3 may be supple and inviting initially, but there's no mistaking its honed power and tightly knit style. It offers an array of aromatics, from lifted tones of violets, blueberry and woody herbs to black raspberries to the earthy, warming spices of French oak (30% new). Full of energy and a sense of urgency, thanks to its mouthwatering acidity, delivering assured tannic grip and long length.
Indigenous yeast. Aged 13 months in French oak, 30% new. Not fined or filtered. Just a few hundred cases made. Good for Felton Road for not milking the price difference between the Blocks and the rest. Dark crimson. Cranberry-liqueur nose. Lots of interest here on this Côte de Nuits-type wine. Fine tannins and real ambition. I ’ d love to taste this blind alongside a fine burgundy premier cru. Still quite youthful. (JR)
