Score 91/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jun 2025

Crystalline, fragrant, pomegranate and red cherry, bitter orange peel on the edge, a fantastically drinkable wine, absolutely ready to go, and this is a wonderful expression of limestone, unfussy but juicy. The last year of 100% Merlot in this wine, before addition of Cabernet Franc in 2022. Harvest September 17 to October 19, 47hl/h yield. 40% aged in tank, the rest in neutral one year old barrels.

All Merlot raised in used barrels and tank, the translucent ruby-hued 2021 Château Troplong Mondot Mondot has a Pinot Noir-like perfume of red berries, peppery herbs, chalky minerality, and hints of white truffle. It's incredibly elegant, has silky, fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish.

The 2021 Mondot comes from the newly purchased vineyards, not permitted to be absorbed into the Grand Vin until the next classification. It has a fragrant bouquet with red cherry, strawberry pastille and just a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly chocolate-tinged entry, quite spicy and chalky toward the finish. Fine.

The 2021 Mondot is a bright, vibrant wine. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, orange peel, mint and white pepper abound. A wine of crystalline energy and tension, the 2021 is super-impressive in this tasting. Even so, it comes across a touch reticent and still recovering from bottle shock.
