It’s a real pleasure to share my last bottle of the 1967 Barbaresco Riserva Asili with this group. I have been fortunate over the years to drink numerous bottles of the 1967. This is a superb bottle of the 1967. Its color and overall integrity are far better than most other examples I have seen. Gracious, delicate and nicely softened by time, the 1967 Asili is sublime. Hints of orange peel and cranberry add aromatic lift, but the 1967 is like a slightly faded flower. Its time has come.

I am down to my last few bottles of Bruno Giacosa’s 1967 Barbaresco Riserva Asili, the first vintage the maestro of Neive made from this top-flight vineyard in Barbaresco. I can’t think of a better group to drink this bottle with. Sweet, layered and silky on the palate, the 1967 Asili graces the palate with exquisite finesse. Today, the 1967 is clearly at peak, and won’t improve from here. Still, for sentimental reasons I can’t bring myself to open my last few bottles.
Giacosa's 1967 Barbaresco Riserva Asili has reached its peak. It is still a beautiful wine, but starting to fray just a touch around the edges. All things considered, the 1967 has held up beautifully. Most winemakers would be thrilled to have made such a gorgeous wine, but it is time to drink up any remaining bottles.
The 1967 Barbaresco Asili Riserva is perhaps just a touch less interesting than the 1964 Santo Stefano. The fruit is wonderfully long, pure and silky but the wine is a bit more resolved.
About the producer
Bruno Giacosa – now run by daughter Bruna – is a cult Nebbiolo producer, that has consistently made some of the best single-vineyard Barbaresco and Barolo from the 1960s onwards. The“red-label” Riservas are some of the finest and most collectable wines in Italy.
